This is the "Gene" for success October 28, 2005 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
First several pages already attracted my eagerness to learn this book. The authors found that strategic combination of two mutually opposite concepts "continuity" and "change" are necessary for having "The Ultimate Competitive Advantage".The authors' finding through the interviews and survey from successful companies;"Continuing business model changes" is therefore a new finding, which distinguishes the book from other successful business books. The book stays away from providing only one answer, which most of other business book tends to end up with. The authors finding comes from actual experiences and stories of successful leaders and companies, therefore there are abundant references in the books which attract business leaders' attention. The book is written in an excellent instructive way to guide the readers to find each own "road map" of carrying out "continuing business model changes" to win every competition to face in the future. It is like to formulate "gene" of winning, just as every ancestor of us did to continue the life until today. As an MBA and president of several companies, I need to keep this book on my desk to pursue "The Ultimate Competitive Advantage"
Waste of time and money May 24, 2005 8 out of 24 found this review helpful
Don't waste your time and money on this book. It contains a laundry list of what need to do. Nothing inspired. Don't be confused by the high rating. Read a few excerpts you will get my idea.
Strongly Recommend! April 24, 2005 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I found the book very interesting because the philosophy underlying the book led to Kaizen Everyday (continuous improvement) thinking in Japan. Every company is destined to grow or be dissolved. So top executives must always consider to innovate their business models. Managers must pursue better performance and results instead of satisfying present happiness. This book shows varieties of practical ideas with actual company examples to breakthrough the present sluggish situation or to get sustainable growth. I am sure the ideas, strategies, and techniques in this book will galvanize the readers. I strongly recommend every manager, marketer, entrepreneur, and executive, particularly the old economy one, have this book as a bible.
A Book With A Competitive Advantage!!! April 16, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
There are many books with great ideas for business innovation. Most of these require a significant dollar investment to implement idea. I found The Ultimate Competitive Advantage to be very refreshing in this respect. The only real investment necessary to implement these ideas is good old-fashioned creativity. I am a huge fan of brainstorming, and if you read between the lines of this book, the theme is about brainstorming new ideas to innovate...no investment necessary!
As a strategy consultant dealing primarily with the balanced scorecard, this book has helped me answer the question I get so often: "OK, we have our scorecard now...how do we achieve our profit (or value, or cost reduction) goals?" My answers now often come from this book.
I would recommend this book to any company that understands its need to innovate its business models, but is faced with the reality that very little or no investment funding for this is in the offing. As a consultant, I deal with very few clients that do not fit this bill!
Continual Business Model Innovation April 3, 2005 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Every decade or so businesses have to master an essential new task in order to prosper. Today, business model innovation is that task. The Ultimate Competitive Advantage is the template you need to master this critical challenge. In the language of competitive advantage, continual business model innovation is the source of sustainable competitive advantage. The authors sought to find the simplest, most effective management methods that the most successful companies have used since 1992 to continually outperform competitors. They hope to find these methods by tracking and studying top performing companies while they thought of and made the changes that create these competitive achievements. That kind of real-time measurement and study of creating competitive advantages across many different studies has never been done before. The message of the Ultimate Competitive Advantage is to develop and implement a superior management process that continually improves an organisation's business model - as well as fairly and appropriately rewarding all stakeholders. Recent experience clearly shows that continual business nmodel innovation is the most powerful competitive advantage you can have now. This book is the first strategy and management process guidebook on the successful experiences of continual, industry-leading business model innovators. Mitchell and Coles have created a book which titillates and stimulates the mind into action. The authors provide valuable insights and real world examples of the most important issues separating success from failures in business today. The Ultimate Competitive Advantage is for anyone looking for a new and powerful paradigm for creating success out of the chaos in today's dynamic business climate. The Ultimate Competitive Advantage shows you how to recharging your crerativity, innovation and profit. It challenges existing paradigms and continually reinvesting the competitive landscape to your advantage. For example, rather than do more with less, learn how to do more of what counts. This book sees continual business model innovationb as the source of sustainable competitive advantage. In this, it goes beyond Michael Porter and Jay Barney. This book is superior to "Competitive Advantage" and "Gaining and Sustaining Competitive ADvantage".
